Origins of the Italian collar

Simply called the standard collar by LE CHEMISEUR®, the Italian collar originated in Italy, but was popularized by the English in the second half of the 18th century. Very versatile, it's the most popular collar.

Italian collar, contemporary sophistication

Revived in recent years, the Italian collar is the second most common type of collar after the French collar. Less strict than the French collar, it features a wide opening and angled points that spread perpendicular to the neck when buttoned. It's trimmed with an inner interlining that ensures a nice drape when unbuttoned. In this way, the neck is more unobstructed.

Clean, horizontal and wide, the line helps to soften and balance long, angular faces, giving them stability and width. On the contrary, this collar will tend to round out already round faces. In addition, LE CHEMISEUR® slides removable stays into the collar tips, giving it a straighter, more rigid appearance. Be sure to remove them before washing your shirt.

Synonymous with contemporary sophistication, the Italian collar allows you to create an elegant and trendy shirt.

The Italian collar for modern gentlemen

chemise homme sur mesure col italien

Both elegant and modern, the Italian collar lends modern style to your drape. A sure bet for professional drape, this collar enhances classic, slim-fit and formal shirts. By combining the slim fit with the Italian collar, this shirt will be your best ally for any occasion. If you're looking for a collar with even more open points, take a look at cutaway collar shirts.

The Italian collar makes a great look with a shirt on its own, or with a tie and jacket. It can also be paired with a jacket and trousers, rather than a real suit, to minimize its impact on the silhouette. If you prefer to go for a suit, opt for a suit jacket with large lapels.

To wear a tie with this collar, it's advisable to choose a fairly thick tie and make a double knot to fill the opening. Windsor and Balthus knots are ideal, as they highlight the collar's spacious shape. However, be careful not to choose a knot that's too wide, which could create the illusion of an elastic tie. Also, avoid a tie that's too slim, as the knot could get lost and look tiny in this large collar.
