It’s a proven classic, perfectly at home in a professional setting. Steer clear of synthetics, though, however cheap they are. After some texture? A knitted tie pairs easily with a smooth suit and an oxford shirt.

A quick way to spot real silk: let the tie slide through your hands. Silk catches on the slightest roughness of your skin, while synthetic glides straight through.

For a touch of character, play with patterns - a Jacquard tie, for instance. They lift an outfit that feels too plain and add a note of sophistication. Just keep the scale and contrast in check: patterns that are too large or too bold quickly tip into fancy-dress territory.

Then there’s width. For broad shoulders, go for a wider blade - 8 centimetres is the sweet spot.
