Size 39 or size 41? When it comes to finding the right men's shirt size, you're often faced with a jungle of sizing systems. Each country has its own standards, and even within the same brand, sizes can vary. Standard sizes are not suitable for everyone, as they are based on statistical averages that don't always reflect different morphologies. So a size M from one brand may well correspond to a size L from another. Discouraging, isn't it?
In addition to these variations, ready-to-wear sizes are often designed to meet industrial criteria first and foremost. This can lead to approximate adjustments that don't always meet consumer expectations. Fortunately, there are ways around these problems, and LE CHEMISEUR® is here to help.
Sizing systems differ from country to country, depending on industrial needs and local morphologies. Standards were developed at different times, often for specific historical reasons.
France: French sizes are expressed in even numbers, such as 38, 40 or 42. They are based on measurements in centimeters, in relation to the neck size. This system originated in haute couture, which influenced ready-to-wear after the Second World War.
USA and UK: In the USA and UK, sizes are expressed in inches, taking into account neck circumference and sleeve length (e.g. 16"/34"). This system was originally created to meet 19th-century military requirements. Some brands also use more generic sizes such as Small, Medium or Large, adding to the confusion.
These differences can be explained by different industrial contexts and morphologies from one region to another. For the modern consumer, this makes choosing the right men's shirt size more complicated than it needs to be.
The sizes we use correspond to the neckline of the shirt, in cm. The neckline is usually indicated on your store-bought shirts, and below you'll find the correspondence with US and UK sizes :
